Client / Context
GBV Impunity in Latin America and the Caribbean (Jamaica focus).
Objective
To generate credible, survivor-centred evidence on barriers to justice and impunity in cases of gender-based violence (GBV) with a special focus on the intersection of GBV and gang-based violence.
Our Approach
We led the implementation of an ethically grounded qualitative study focused on survivor experiences within the justice system. As such, we ensured that the highest ethical standards for research involving survivors of violence were adhered to and that ethical safeguards were included at all stages of the research process.
- Trauma-informed research design aligned with international ethical guidelines for GBV research
- Development of survivor-centred interview protocols emphasizing informed consent, confidentiality, and participant autonomy
- Careful selection and training of researchers on ethical engagement, distress protocols, and referral pathways
- Use of safe, private interview settings and survivor-controlled participation
- Integration of psychosocial referral mechanisms for participants requiring support
Data Collection & Analysis
The study employed in-depth qualitative interviews with survivors and key stakeholders, supported by rigorous transcription, anonymization, and secure data management processes. Analysis focused on identifying systemic barriers to reporting, investigation, and prosecution, while protecting survivor identity and wellbeing.
Ethical Safeguards
Ethics were central, not procedural. The research prioritized:
- Do-no-harm principles
- Continuous consent and the right to withdraw
- Anonymization of data and removal of identifying details
- Researcher wellbeing and secondary trauma mitigation
Outcomes & Impact
The study produced high-quality, ethically sound evidence that:
- Informed regional advocacy and policy dialogue on GBV impunity
- Strengthened understanding of survivor experiences within justice systems
- Provided actionable recommendations for institutional reform and survivor-centred responses
The research has been used by stakeholders to support programming, policy engagement, and accountability efforts, demonstrating that rigorous evidence generation can be achieved without compromising survivor safety or dignity.
